Duration: two weeks (July 2006)

Project Location: Grand Hotel Toblach, Italy
Recently, I’ve worked on on a permanent light installation in a concert hall in northern Italy, right next to the town where I was born. The installation consists of 185 LED elements distributed on the side of the concert hall. The frieze is 72 meters long and 2 meters high. Every LED element can mix almost every color by combining the three colors Red, Green and Blue. By controlling each element individually, it is possible to create beautiful gradients and move theese gradients arround the room. This results in a very unique ambient lighting.

The LEDs are controlled by a custom build Interface (called “Lichtorgel” or “LightOrgan”) running vvvv. The hardware for the interface was built here at the meso office (mainly by Max Wolf and Sebastian Oschatz) and I have programmed the light control patch and the management console for the Lichtorgel.
For further details you can take a look at the press release (in german).
I had also the opportunity to demonstrate the possibilites of our system at a live performance with the “SWR Rundfunkorchester”, conducted by Christoph Poppen on July 15th. To say the least: we had no complaints.
For the next day, I created a custom performance for the world premier of Hubert Stuppner’s „Mahlers Erde“ (based on Gustav Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde) performed by Kronos Quartett.
A slightly more simple lighting was used for “Dracula” by Philipp Glass, that was also performed by Kronos Quartett the same evening.
